THEATRE | A production of Krétakör Theatre

MC93 Bobigny
Paris (FR) | 2002

The production undertakes to look over Hungary’s history since the fall of Communism. Our goal is not to chronicle the events which happened, or point out real or apparent connections, fact-finding or exposure; in the piece we only play with the facts, mixing reality with fiction, so that from the everyday a sovereign, half-fairy tale, theatrical world can be generated, examining Hungary and indeed Eastern Europe’s last 13 years through a grotesque-satirical lens.

We are thinking not of a play but a performance, or better yet an event. On this night we hold a national self-examination with the help of the theatrical form. In the musical selection which determines the mood of the show, the full spectrum of the Hungarian musical tradition, lively to to this day – from folk music to Hungarian art music via operette all the way to rock and roll – is present.
