OPERA | A production of Stadttheater Klagenfurt
Klagenfurt (AT) | 2013
Troy has been destroyed. Finally, Greek fighters return back to their homeland, led by their leader, the Cretan king Idomeneo. But they find no peace at home either. Already on their way back their ship gets into a heavy storm. In order to appease the god of the sea, Poseidon, Idomeneo vows to sacrifice the first human being he’ll meet after his rescue. Since this man is his own son, Idamante, a series of serious conflicts unfolds. Idomeneo tries to protect his son, but his actions place the whole empire and its citizens in danger.
Idomeneo, which first opened in 1781, is a dramatic masterpiece by Mozart: it humanizes the mythical original conflict of a father fighting against sacrificing his own child; but it also evokes the problematics of the autonomy of man confronting divine law.
