Father Courage

STREET THEATRE | A production of Compagny Le Phun and Krétakör

Szentendrei Teátrum
Szentendre (HU) | 2008

A summer theatrical co-production with the French Le Phun company which audiences could catch on Szentendre island. Phéraille, the leader of the French group, had decades of experience with the Royal de Luxe company. As he and his team have worked in many parts of the world, but not yet visited Eastern Europe, they chose, in collaboration with Krétakör, the Danube island lying just north of Budapest as the first waysation of their tour in our region. Father Courage, who was in fact nothing but a mechanical iron horse, reminisced in the manner of a travel diary about his memories of visitations in European regions, and the relationships formed with the brave and poetic individuals he encountered on the way.

The French-Hungarian creative team’s mythical-metaphorical performance mainly examined psychological issues in the form of utopian visions. The event was genuinely site specific: spectators travelled by boat to the location, where they encountered scenes set among the barracks and wooden huts of the former Pioneer camp, and the natural environment of the island wildlife; indeed, even in the water.
