One of the most important social questions is how to help those that consistently go wanting. There are citizens who live in the European Union but are nevertheless forced to vegetate at the margins of society – because a given state treats them unjustly, because they have no marketable expertise, because they’ve had no luck.

There are economists and entrepreneurs who feel a kind of responsibility for those who occupy a position at the very bottom of economic statistics. There are some, though not many, who are preoccupied by the issue of justice and solidarity.

András Polgár is one of them. He’s a Hungarian businessman who has been concerned for decades with the question of how to sustainably help those who have neither assets nor emergency reserves. How it might be possible to develop a functioning model for them – which, if deployed at the state level, could even be made available to tens of thousands of people.

Initiated and supported by András Polgár, the KIÚT (Way Out) program has now proven for ten years that complex methods can help activate even the most impoverished, and that those with the capacity for it can turn into self-sufficient entrepreneurs. The program provides participants with microcredit, on occasion land, agricultural inputs, trained mentors, and economic and agricultural advice.

The film takes viewers into the world of the poor families supported by the KIÚT program. It offers a sense of what life is like in central Europe at the beginning of the 21st century for those who are too impoverished or too credulous in democracy. In Hungary, the future is hopeless for both social groups.
